Terry’s Memories of Wythenshawe I

Ask anyone in their forties what they remember from their childhood and
I can bet that they will talk, pretty much, about the same things;… Tank tops,
flared trousers, split knee loons, snake belts, Oxford Bags, the Carpenters,
Man from Uncle, etc,etc,etc,…
Go forward a generation and you will get a different list; New Romantics,
Punk Music, Doc Marten Boots, drainpipe jeans, Starsky & Hutch, etc, etc,…
And so, with each generation, you will get a list that differs from the last. But you could get these same answers anywhere, from Lands` End to John O` Groats. From the early Fifties onwards we have been living in the age of mass media where people up and down the country, indeed across
most of the world, can have a shared experience.
But there must be something that is unique to Wythenshawe.
Perhaps we were all wearing the same penny round shirts, drinking the same illicit Party Fours or Party Sevens that sprayed half their contents on those gathered around expectantly; We may all have watched the same episode of
“The Beverly Hillbillies” ( remember how the street emptied when someone shouted that it was on ?), we may all have swapped the same Man From Uncle chewing gum cards, but,………and please don`t ask me to define this,…………
somehow there must be a difference between a housing estate in Manchester and a housing estate in London or Edinburgh.
I am hoping that, by the simple act of writing my recollections, someone, somewhere, will either provide the answer or at least point me in the right direction. Until they do I will inundate this website with my memories of the
place. If you don`t believe me,……keep watching
…………………
