Brief History of Wythenshawe Hall

Wythenshawe Hall

The original Hall was built around 1540 by Robert Tatton, possibly on the site of an earlier medieval building. Fourteen generations of the Tatton family lived at the hall until 1926 before the estate was sold to provide new housing for the people of Manchester.

Probably the most notable incident in the Hall’s history came during the English Civil War of 1642-49 when it was beseiged by Cromwell’s troops. Royalist Robert Tatton defended his home for over three months during the winter of 1643-44, with the help of more than fifty servants, tenants and neighbours. Six of the defenders were killed and it was only the arrival of two cannons from Manchester that finally forced his surrender.

In the late sixties I was talking with a security/watchman who actually worked in the Hall. He related the fact that whilst on night shifts he had actually seen Mary Webb on a number of occasions. He came across a an honest man, sober in habit.
